I'm setting a date. We'll see if anyone shows up. This movie was going on while I desperately searched a theater at work for a set of keys (that I lost while cleaning the theater earlier) to no avail. Movie seemed kinda good tbh 'I have a hall. I have a dress. The apartment is almost ready. It's a small task for God to find me a groom by the end of Hanukkah' So says Michal, the kooky heroine of writer/director Rama Burshtein's Through the Wall, an orthodox romcom about one young woman's determination to find the love of her life. With a month to go before her wedding, thirty-two year old mobile petting zoo owner Michal suddenly finds herself deserted by her fiancé, following a dramatic case of extremely cold feet and the sobering realisation that he does not really love her. Despite her abiding Hasidic faith, Michal initially feels utterly lost by this unexpected turn of events. Coming slowly to, she realises… Almost a lighthearted drama about love and loneliness but it completely veers off the piety cliff.

I'm looking forward to seeing more films by these women. Burshtein posses a rare talent of being able to make message movies without bashing you continuously over the head or sucking any entertainment value from said works. Pretty sweet and smart observations on faith in practice and in theory while quietly poking fun at how absurd it can appear, even in the context of religion. Michal attracts the men around her, not by her willingness to submit herself to the doctrines of matrimony, but her belief in her own will, although I can see that as a viewer it is possible to get these confused. Noa Kooler is very convincing as Michal, but the acting is very good all around. I liked how it dealt with loneliness, but I just couldn't buy the whole idea and premise of the film. Stuck in neverending close-ups, Noa Kooler still offers up a solid performance. There's a more nuanced and darkly comedic version of this wedding premise out there, but this is religious service nonsense. Fill the Void made it seem like Burshtein might be quite a stylist (all that shallow-focus! ), but this looks unremarkable verging on tacky, with some ugly skin tones in the wedding climax. It also sounds, at first, like a glorified sitcom, and it doesn't pass the Bechdel test either - but there's more going on here, and a lot of it is exhilarating. Faith in God (Burshtein is an Orthodox Jew) turns out to rhyme quite neatly with the rom-com faith in true love, which is equally unreasonable and magical, and everyone we meet is hilariously eccentric and self-destructive (yet also grave and self-possessed, like people in a De Oliveira movie), from Michal herself assigning God the role of cutting… Wow. I really loved this. I came for madcap shenanigans, but instead stayed for a reflective look at loneliness and struggling with spiritual faith.

For there is something of the fairy tale, not only in the movie's high-concept subject matter — which is a young woman's seemingly insane confidence that her Prince Charming, "the love of my life, " will suddenly appear to take the place of the fiancé who has jilted her in time for their planned wedding, a month hence — but also in the manner of its telling. It begins, for example, with the visit of the heroine, Michal (Noa Koler) to a Wise Woman, a stock figure of fairy tales, who… The Wedding Plan' is an engaging take on the mad rush to get married filtered through a religious lens... Oy vey! This is not least for me. Kooler is great but c'mon the story is ridiculous.
