Certainly not as strong as the two Bride with White Hair films - the wu xia genre flatters Yu's strengths more than the period melodrama does - or even his terrific minor comedy Shogun and Little Kitchen, but much more interesting than most reviews I've read imply. On paper this lavish, big-budget HK remake of Phantom of the Opera with Leslie Cheung as the Phantom sounded like my absolute dream film.
