L'ultima discesa si inserisce in quel filone di survival movie a sfondo biografico che negli ultimi anni sta riscuotendo discreto successo, con atmosfere e sfumature diverse che spaziano dall'allucinata disperazione di 127 ore alla declinazione romantico-mistica di Resta con me, per arrivare a un passo dal torture porn d'autore con Revenant – Redivivo. Purtroppo, il film di Scott Waugh appare fin dai primi minuti come un adattamento decisamente innocuo e depotenziato di una storia vera che avrebbe potuto fare scintille sul grande schermo, principalmente a causa della confusione di registri e contenuti che il regista mette in scena, senza mai trovare un efficace baricentro fra dramma umano e familiare, parabola sportiva e istinto di sopravvivenza. L'ultima discesa è carente dal punto di vista della tensione e dell'emozione La triste vicenda umana di Eric LeMarque è l'emblema di quel sottilissimo confine che separa la gloria (in questo caso sportiva) dall'autodistruzione.
