The Tudor dynasty had been established by conquest in 1485 and Henry was only its second monarch. England had not so far had a ruling queen, and the dynasty was not secure enough to run the risk of handing the Crown on to a woman, risking disputed succession or domination of a foreign power through marriage. Henry had anyway fallen in love with Anne Boleyn, the sister of one of his many mistresses, and tried to persuade the Pope to grant him an annulment of his marriage on the grounds that it had never been legal. Royal divorces had happened before: Louis IX had been granted a divorce in 1499, and in 1528 James IV's widow Margaret (Henry's sister) had also been granted one. However, a previous Pope had specifically granted Henry a licence to marry his brother's widow in 1509. In May 1529, Wolsey failed to gain the Pope's agreement to resolve Henry's case in England. All the efforts of Henry and his advisers came to nothing; Wolsey was dismissed and arrested, but died before he could be brought to trial.
With the sequel novel being released recently in the UK, I decided to listen to this book which I originally read 30 years ago. The Life and Loves of a She-Devil starts out simply enough as a very plain, even ugly, wife Ruth is emotionally abused by her husband Bobbo and his beautiful romance novel author lover Mary Fisher. This novel by British author Fay Weldon which was made into a 1989 movie (She-Devil) staring Meryl Streep and Roseanne Barr is unforgettable. Some reviewers view this book as satire of romance novels, but to me it is a story of sometimes fully and always brutal revenge by a scorned wife. Gemma Dawson's narration is pitch perfect. I award this audio novel the 5 stars it deserves, but I cannot recommend it except to lovers of very, very dark and brutal (and funny) psychological thrillers. For those who do listen to it I promise you will never forget wronged wife Ruth and her unfaithful husband Bobbo.

Autore: Roberto Nepoti Pare ieri: invece son passati dieci anni da quando arrivò sugli schermi un film sulle corse d'auto clandestine destinato a crescere e moltiplicarsi. Giunta al quinto episodio (uno dei migliori, per chi apprezza... ), la serie ha virato più decisamente al crime-movie. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) e l'ex-poliziotto Brian (Paul Walker) sono a Rio, dove preparano un grosso colpo. Devono vedersela, però, con un uomo d'affari losco e con un agente federale (Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, new entry nella famiglia). Pieno di ammiccamenti alle puntate precedenti e di personaggi riciclati, un film che dà quello che promette: corse rompicollo, inseguimenti, scazzottate, pallottole, il tutto senza risparmio. Al volante, il regista Justin Lin si mostra pilota esperto. Autore: Il Giornale (... ) La serie di film di Fast&Furious, invece, migliora con il passare degli anni (ne sono trascorsi dieci dal primo faccia a faccia tra O'Conner e Torretto) senza perdere di vista i suoi cardini principali (le corse clandestine e le belle macchine, ragazze da capogiro e protagonisti che bucano lo schermo) ma riuscendo a diluirli in trame accattivanti e diversificate che finiscono per accontentare spettatori di età eterogenee.

Almodóvar sostituisce alle fantasie e alle pulsioni dei personaggi cronenberghiani che non (si) riconoscono il (proprio) corpo, la dolorosa consapevolezza insita nei propri: al contrario, è allo spettatore che la verità viene svelata un poco alla volta - anche per questo motivo la partenza risulta farraginosa. Almodóvar sottomette l'istintiva carnalità dei suoi soggetti a un rigoroso esercizio concettuale fondato sulla trasmigrabilità del corpo: l'estetica algida e senza guizzi ne è la conferma.
HaHa! Have to laugh at the antics in these old movies. Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson and even Cid Charise (who was hard to recognize) do their best to impress. HaHa! I do love these old movies. It's nice to be able to just relax and enjoy. The dance number with Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, and Ricardo Montalban is spectacular. Full of passion, great chemistry, and terrific fun. None of that is present in the rest of the movie. It would almost be reason enough to recommend the film... if the scene alone weren't readily available on YouTube. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Often cited as the least favorite film of both Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson, this box-office flop still is quite charming in its cartoony humor and brilliant technicolor romance. Points for this being the only film they made together where Frank ends up with Kathryn and a random dance number between Ricardo Montalban, Ann Miller, and Cyd Charisse choreographed by Stanley Donen. Worth watching for the Cyd Charisse bit, and that's fucking it.
Familiar British stars here complement the story in which Dean Charles Chapman, and for the most part George McKay, begins and ends the story of "1917" in a blossoming meadow by a tree, passing through the difficult path through the trenches of the enemy, burning cities, swamps and torn from the shells of a field, where the semantic and emotional culmination becomes a classic but fundamental human denial of war in all its manifestations.
