Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2018 Verified Purchase One of my favorite movies. I have very dark taste when it comes to movies, and have always been a big fan of horror movies. I'm sure that many of you stumbled upon this movie the same way I did, after becoming intrigued by french extremity films. However, if you're not already interested in them and you're not looking to watch a very gory/violent movie, I urge you not to watch this. On the other hand if you're like me, and you are, I'd urge you TO watch this. It's the best I've seen so far in the genre, and I think it has a bit more of an actual story behind it. There was a clear idea on the direction in this movie rather than simply taking an over-used plot and filling it with as much violence as possible. I found the plot itself to be rather original and the acting to be superb. There's definitely plot twists at the beginning that will leave you suprised, and for me, by halfway through I realized I was watching something else entirely than what I originally thought I was watching, if that makes sense.

It's seemingly a secular evalution of humanity, almost to the point of nihilism, so don't let the title (which has marginally religious overtones) fool you. If I'd stopped about a third of the way through the film, which I seriously considered, I'd likely have given Martyrs 2 stars based on the ostensible randomness of the violence. However, to the credit of the director and Morjana Alaoui, as Anna the main character, I was invested enough in her outcome to continue the descent. Five minutes after the screen faded to black, I was tempted to give it 3 stars. It was okay. It was uncomfortable to the extreme, but intelligently complex in nature; still, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone. Now, as time has passed, I'm glad I waited to share my thoughts and finally decide on a rating of 4 stars because I just cannot stop thinking about this movie. I will recommend it to fellow film lovers. Not only to pose the question, "What the hell!? " but to open serious dialogue about the further theoretical implications of this sobering movie.
My mother would tell stories of him rebelling as a teenager. He is way better now, but he always likes to control things and people, especially my cousin. This caused my cousin to have childhood that was always controlled by his father, which couldn't be very enjoyable. I think this is the cause of my cousin's strange behaviours. My cousin's mother is a really down to earth person and very caring. She makes great food, but sadly, she is also constantly controlled by my mother's brother. He was just always like that, no one can't change that. I visited my family in China around in either 2014 or 2016(I forgot), when I was around 10 years old, I was still obsessed with this Japanese show called "Ultraman. " It's about giant people fighting monsters, and I can confidently say that kids would stop watching it at around 9-12 years old. My cousin was around 13-15 at the time. He also liked to watch the show with me. It wasn't like a grown up watching spongebob with a little kid just to spend time with the kid.

This is where it might lose some people (if they've made it this far), but I think this perfectly/deliberately done by the director to convey the sense of dread & horror of the circumstance... If you can handle extreme horror (this is probably on the lighter end of that, but still in there), I can't recommend this movie enough!!! Despite the Non-stop, In-your-face violence and gore the storyline was well developed. The acting is solid- with the actress portraying the main character giving a stellar performance. You may be sickened at the level of depravity, you may want to yell at the screen in anger, or even shed a tear in sympathy- But you WILL definitely enjoy this film
Finally, what is Martyrs? It isn't nightmare material, oh that it were that simple. Is this horror? Horrific, yes. Horror, no. A Thriller? It certainly is not thrilling to watch -- there's suspense galore and tension in spades, but unlike most true thrillers, there is no catharsis. Pascal Laugier, the writer/director of Martyrs, very shrewdly encapsulates every person's anxiety (what happens in "The End") in order to draw the viewer in to both Anna's (the protagonist) and the antogonists' corresponding predicatments. Martyrs is the sort of critical film that may leave you with more questions than it answers, but in the opinion of this viewer, they are very hefty, significant the end. I hate that this movie gets so much criticism for the violence, when in my opinion, the high level of violence is necessary to make the idea work. The only thing that I found lacking was the character development of Anna, I would've liked to know more about her. They did a great job with Lucie, and you really begin to have a real emotional response to Lucie, where as I felt that was lacking with Anna's character. All in all, I really enjoyed this movie. If you're looking for a top of the line horror film, especially if you're into french extremity films', you will find this movie to be a real treat. No doubt for some viewers, this movie is only a heftier budget and a hair's breath away from being a gruesome all-out revenge-themed shocksploitation flick. For others, who can stomach their way through it as I barely did (in the interest of full disclosure I did hit the 10 second skip button about a handful of times -- not for gore, but for sheer brutality), it opens up seriously uncomfortable psychological and philosophical cans of worms ranging from transcendentalism and metaphysics to parapsychology (i. e., the concept of Afterlife) to, oh heck, everything in between.

Well, this movie definitely succeeds in getting under your skin! But the making of this movie is personally inspiring to me, knowing someone can be productive even when they're at their worst... That said, this is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, perhaps even one of my-all time favorite movies! It gives a horrifying twist to revenge movies... If you're a gore-hound, this absolutely has something for you. If you like psychological horror, this has plenty. You want supernatural horror? This has a good dash of that, too... and existential horror. It also combines great drama, suspense & acting all-around to make a movie that can be talked about for ages on end! (Not to short-change Morjana Alaoui, but of the 2 leads, Mylene Jampanoi is absolutely stunning! ) There is definite ambiguity in the movie, especially with the way it ends, but I don't think it's annoying in any way because it leaves room for several different interpretations. The movie is divided into 2 main parts, the 2nd of which is probably the hardest to watch because of some repetitiveness.
