If you want seriously creepy night time horror, watch the Kerr version, the sighting of Miss Jessel appearing in the distant marsh is hair raising, and the children are downright disturbing. The Kerr film also does a better job of underscoring the isolation of the governess in her plight. This 2009 film takes a decidedly different approach and may be viewed without fear of night terrors although it is a more carefully considered film and far more thought provoking. I'm in this category and was super excited to see a ghost story with Michelle Dockery pop up in my AP recommendations after binge watching Downton Abbey. I was even more superer excitedest when Dan Stevens popped up in the first few frames. Mary and Matthew before there was such a thing, and in a ghost story, hooray! But as I sat there watching it, a numb sensation started creeping over if I had seen this movie before.

Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2019 Verified Purchase although I despised the ending after Miles dies, all that nonsense about being sent to the gallows and then the face of Peter Quint suddenly appearing in the face of the guard, the arrival of the new governess and Flora saying "oh there you are, we've been waiting for you", against a backdrop of eerie like the the insane asylum premise. other than that, the overall story is handled a little more deftly than the Kerr version and I especially enjoyed how the role of the housekeeper is bumbling in the Kerr film. Michelle Dockery is a steely backboned actress and navigates the role with perfect pitch and balance, Deborah Kerr tends to get on my nerves with her wild eyed histrionics as the governess. Granted, the Kerr version is more frightening in the way it delivers the supernatural elements (blood chilling actually) but I also appreciated the more straightforward handling of the spectral Quint and Jessel characters which was the perfect foil for the undercurrent of growing menace exhibited by the children.

They were completely unnecessary and overdone. Didn't think much of any of the actors. There's really nothing scary about it, because the "ghosts" are lost to the sex and the violence. Read the book or look at other adaptations recommended by other reviewers. Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2018 Verified Purchase If you're interested in an adaptation that strays from the original, and makes all other adaptations look good, this one's for you. Both innapropriately sexually explicit, featuring zero frights (it was intended as a horror), I'd say they butchered it as best they could do with the time given. I rate it two stars because I'm feeling generous and had nothing better to watch on this lazy Friday night. Otherwise, it would have scored a perfect zero! The Turn of the Screw Based on Henry James famous novel, this latest version emphasises the ambiguity of this supernatural drama. Does Ann really see ghosts? Are the two children in her care about to be possessed by the spirits of the sexually dubious Peter Quint and Emily Jessell? This is left to the viewer to decide during a bleak yet sumptious 90 minutes of classic period storytelling. Um, because I had. This movie is so dull that I 95% deleted it from my memory bank after the first time I watched it. I only vaguely - very vaguely - remembered certain aspects but had no idea what the story line was or how the movie ended. That's a pretty rare achievement for a movie that I've watched all the way through. I guess the glass-half-full view is that it was like getting two movies for the price of one (which in this case was "free, " so even that didn't feel like a triumph). I don't think this movie is terrible - there's just not much there to like to make it a favorite. It has the start of a good ghost movie, but most everything seems forced or underdeveloped. It's like a Thanksgiving Dinner with 50 strangers and only green beans and mashed potatoes. And with a good Pinot but the cork broke off in the neck of the bottle. I haven't read the book, but I have the impression that they cut or rewrote parts - probably to "modernize" it - that did more damage than good. Having subsequently watched the Lynn Redgrave version, I also think Miles was seriously miscast.

I enjoyed watching Michelle Dockery & Dan Stevens acting together again outside of Downton Abbey. Also the cameo by Nicola Walker in the role of the murdered maid was albeit a real quick. This Henry James novella was meant to be a ghost story, instead of a rather boring waste of somnambulistic acting. The Gothic/Victorian atmosphere, period clothing, etc., was at least spot on. Sadly Michelle Dockery's performance was less than stellar. Also Dan Stevens portrayal of the 'earnest' doctor, man of science, etc., so determined to cure the shock/malaise of his patient's lethargy was also predictable. I hate to leave bad reviews, especially when I'm watching actors whose performances I generally adore, but in roles that flatter their acting skills & abilities. I suggest you watch Lynn Redgrave's portrayal of the governess in The Turn of the Screw made in 2002. Ms. Redgrave's acting abilities were much more rewarding than this recent redo. Therefore I shall blame the Director or lack of said Direction!
