There isn't a bad performance in the lot, and the authenticity of the setting and dialog (Norwegian with English subtitles) lend a great deal to the film. Yes, it follows a formula we all know well, and perhaps puts a little too much focus on the action rather than the politics and motivations behind the factions, but for fans of battles and period piece action, this will not disappoint.

I would also like to say that there is nothing LOW budget about this film, maybe it didn't cost as much as the big screen blockbusters to make but the acting, costumes and the props, sets and beautiful yet rugged countryside cottages and castles it was filmed in give it a completely authentic feel. Also the skiing and stunts were very well done! And people need to remember that in medieval Scandinavia that there weren't near as many people as there are today, battles and conflicts even ones involving kings and there heirs and the factions trying to take control of power and land were on a far smaller scale than most people realize, so what Iam trying to say is that it wasn't unrealistic to have battles and fights for the crown or whatever between a group of 30-40 fighting men on each side. So if you start watching a movie like this one (which is based on a true story) expecting to see large scale set piece battles and what not your not going to find them. Large scale battles with more than a 100 men per side were a rare thing in medieval Scandinavia.

I don't consider this a bad thing, though I do think it failed, just as many teleplays of the golden era failed in their attempts. There's nothing wrong with bringing direction, camerawork, production design, etc. to the fore. Unfortunately, the scripts suffer, at least in this case. The viewer is innundated with flashy techniques like handheld cameras which achieve nothing other than making the show look modern, or a seven-minute long single take near the end of the final episode which contained about three minutes of dialogue that actually advanced the plot or developed the character in meaningful ways. Is it worth watching? Yes. But don't compare it the greatest costume dramas ever made. Take it for what is, and it's a fine drama.
