By season 4 some of the story arcs and character development had stopped making sense/being enjoyable/being bearable to me. Season 7 continues the destruction of what made the misery these characters face on a regular basis bearable - the Family (including Kev and Veronica but minus Frank and Monica) pulling together and the hope which that inspires, and the occasional moments of redemption that it facilitates. The loss Kev and Veronica experience this season is an undesirable plot point, but I can live with it, especially given that ultimately they come back into the fold of the story's central family matrix as a result. Still it was disappointing to see the depiction of a poly family treated as a wacky side plot and ultimately used as a way to lay Kev and V low. Lip's spiral of destruction was understandable in the context of the events in his life and his family of origin, but as the seasons have progressed that horse has just been flogged to death. He needs to move into his rebirth phase.

Flags of Our Fathers After the death of his father, John, James Bradley was inspired to research the lives of the six men (including his father) in the famous photograph of the raising of the American flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. His idea was turned down by twenty-seven publishers over the course of twenty-five months, and was finally published in 2000 by Bantam Books. It would later be on the New York Times Bestseller List for forty-six weeks. Bradley conducted extensive research and interviews with family members, friends, fellow Marines, and others to tell the stories of the six men before, during, and after the flagraising. His father, a navy corpsman, PFC Ira Hayes and PFC Rene Gagnon survived the war, while SGT Michael Strank, CPL Harlon Block, and PFC Franklin Sousley died later in the battle. He wrote Flags of Our Fathers with the help of Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Powers. The book was a success, and soon after its release, Steven Spielberg acquired the film rights.
