Prima inquadratura: un orologio. Sui titoli di testa la macchina da presa s'avventura nei suoi ingranaggi e non li lascerà per tutto il film (riprendendo anche i segnatempo mosci di Salvador Dalì o, nel finale, la lotta contro il tempo di un chirurgo in sala operatoria). L'adrenalinica corsa contro il Tempo è una delle cifre dominanti di questo spaccato di 24 ore sul mondo giornalistico: evidentemente Ron Howard ama la celebrazione dei mestieri più difficili, ma ai pompieri di Fuoco Assassino mancava l'ironia che qui sollazza e accattiva nelle caricature, rendendo al contempo più credibili le situazioni troppiste, da manicomio, in cui si ritrovano gli eroi della redazione. Valga su tutte quella ottimamente orchestrata dalla regia nel trepidante montaggio parallelo finale, dove le situazioni in co-azione sono (seguono i titoli) "Ferma la stampa! ", "Vendetta del burocrate sputtanato dal giornale! ", "Moglie incinta all'ospedale! ", "Glenn Close ferita ad una gamba! ". A Howard non sfugge che è una professione che porta a trascurare gli affetti, ma non se la sente di condannare o assecondare del tutto nessuna delle parti in gioco; allo stesso modo, parlando di etica professionale, pare non esporsi (il personaggio di Michael Keaton cerca lo scoop o insegue gli scrupoli di coscienza?

Ficha Sinopsis Basada en hechos reales, cuenta la historia de Jim Morries, un jugador de béisbol que nunca logró salir de la segunda división, y una lesión en el hombro puso fin a su carrera como lanzador hace doce años. Ahora es un hombre casado y con hijos, profesor de química y entrenador de béisbol en un instituto de Texas. Un día, su equipo le propone un trato: si consiguen ganar el campeonato regional, Jim tendrá que presentarse a probar suerte a las pruebas de un equipo de primera división. La apuesta es un gran desafío para el equipo, que pasa de ser uno de los peores a ganar el campeonato por primera vez en la historia del instituto. Jim se ve obligado a cumplir su parte del trato, y se presenta a unas pruebas en las que todo el mundo se ríe de él hasta… que se coloca en su posición de lanzador y deja atónitos a los ojeadores (y a él mismo) al conseguir varias bolas rapídisimas a 157 km. por hora. Así es como ficha por los Bay Devil Rays, un equipo de la ciudad de Tampa. Jim tendrá que lanzar muchas bolas antes de conseguir llegar a lo más alto, pero ahora nada puede detenerlo.
